Chapter History

There is some ambiguity as to the very beginnings of the Chi Upsilon chapter but records dating back to 1935 show that it was always a target campus for a group. Rumor has it that the Chi Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi was finally colonized with help from undergraduates and alumni from Mu Deuteron (U of Missouri) and Kappa Upsilon (Kansas) in 1974. The first class consisted of 12 founding members. These men are Alfred Bernstein, Paul Boxer, Steven Goldstein, Jack Houghton, Sheldon Katz, Michael Letey, Martin Morris, David Pomeroy, Kennith Saliman, Michael Schwartz, Sherwyn Vicksman, and Jeffrey Ward. By 1975 Professor Norton Steuben, an Omega Deuteron ’58 (Michigan) alum and longtime CU professor had volunteered to advise the chapter and the Executive Vice President of AEPi, George Toll, met with the men and gave them colony status. Marshal Sclarow, Iota Upsilon ’52 (Iowa) and Dr. James Abramowitz, Nu Deuteron ‘67( Missouri-Rolla) also assisted with advising the new group.

In 1976, the former AEPhi house located at 911 17th street was obtained for the group and by February of 1977 the Colony had initiated 31 members. The Chi Upsilon chapter of AEPi was officially installed as a full fledge chapter at the Broker’s Inn on February 19, 1977. Supreme Sentinal Irving Axelrod presented the charter and by 1978 the chapter had initiated 44 men. The group thrived for a while but records show only one initiate between 1983 and 1987. In 1987 the group was re-founded and revitalized but the housing situation had changed. The chapter eventually moved to a facility at 1453 N Broadway and had a period of tremendous success until 1993 when the chapter was closed by the national fraternity.

In 2002 the Chi Upsilon chapter was recolonized. This time 10 men were dubbed as the re-founding fathers: Daniel Farasat, Todd Degnan, Leeron Laizerovich, Liron Kopinsky, Michael Greenwald, Zach Gelman, Doron Shmueli, Andrew Meyerowitz, Jay White, and Alexander Starik went to work building the fraternity and soon found their first pledge in Doug Siegal.

By the fall of 2004, the colony finally hit its stride with a pledge class that doubled the size of the group. Unfortunately the greek system at CU was forced into turmoil when a pledge at  another fraternity on campus died due to alcohol and hazing. Amidst the incredible anti-greek pressures on campus, the Chi Upsilon Chapter felt that the commitment to living its' Jewish values and loyalty to the national organization would see them through the challenges that they faced. Facing anti-greek campus challenges head on, the members took an active role in forming a new and independent Interfraternity Council, and became involved in student government.

The chapter president ran into Mark Nassi, a Chi Delta (UC-Davis) alum, at a Yom Kippur service on campus and solicited his help as chapter advisor. Norton Steuben also served the chapter once again as an academic advisor. The chapter remained engaged with Hillel and helped to found a local Jewish Sorority called Sigma Rho Lambda, hosted Shabbat dinners, and holiday gatherings.

Over the last 15 years the chapter has had its fair share of ups and downs, challenges and victory’s.  Chi Upsilon endures with the help of incredible undergrads and dedicated alumni and has now initiated over 385 brothers to date.
